Comments
Comments: Great morning heading up Jay and Big Jay for my NEHH. I thought I might just be giving my snowshoes a piggyback ride all day, but was definitely glad I brought them. You'll need them for a least a few more weeks, particularly if you are going out to Big Jay.

The trails lower down are wet and muddy, but not too bad. The monorail starts at almost exactly 3'000. It's very narrow and unstable at first, but firms up pretty quickly. If you don't have snowshoes, I'd definitely recommend microspikes still. Some pretty icy patches which would be har to navigate. No snow on the actual summit of Jay itself or the surrounding ski trails.

The best conditions were actually on the "bushwhack" out to Big Jay. There is a good snowpack and even though no one had been out there for a bit, the herd path was easy to follow. It would be pretty difficult without snowshoes, as even with them I was postholing in places.
