Comments
Comments: Took an unconventional route up Killington- I intended to go for Mendon Peak first, but I took a wrong turn somewhere in the logging road maze and ended up going away from Mendon and toward Killington, so I decided to follow a western ridge up to the Long Trail near Killington's summit using a combination of old woods paths and bushwhacking. Microspiked it to almost halfway up that ridge, then switched to snowshoes. Once on the Long Trail, the footway was packed out, but I still kept my snowshoes on and did so all the way to the summit and back to Cooper Lodge. The upper half of Killington Spur was s.t.e.e.p. with some very slick snow/ice conditions. Take extreme care when descending the spur in conditions like that, as an uncontrolled slide will send you into a tree at Mach 3, and it will hurt.

There was about 3-6 inches of snow at and near the trailhead, with depths steadily increasing with elevation; near Cooper Lodge, some areas had about 4-5 feet of snow. Fortunately due to the hard freeze last night, the snow both on and off trail was nice and solid, but with the forecasted temps this week, conditions should quickly return to soft mush.
