Comments
Comments: Obviously a lot of ice in spots after the recent warm spell and rain. The monorail or trench is solid the whole way to use spikes if care is taken to stay center lined. Any frozen postholes are visible and easily avoided but trekking poles are useful especially on the decent. A few drifted areas on the lower half of the ridge have snow that is not fully consolidated. Going off trail will result in sinking to knee deep or further. Maybe 1-2 foot of snow down low and 3-4 feet up higher but stretches of the ridge that are wind blown are pretty bare at this point. Between the foundation and fire tower I had to bushwhack a much larger bypass then I ever had before-taking a hard right after ascending the first ice bulge at the start of the climb. Then cutting over to the normal winter bypass to avoid the crux section. I'd recommend only going up this section of trail and using trail crampons instead of micro spikes. Either way great care must be taken because it is treacherous here and likely to get more difficult if the 12-18 inches of snow comes this weekend.
