The trail was reasonable to follow up until the last half mile to the Long Trail. At that point, there were faint tracks leading away from the trail on what might have been a straight bushwhack to the junction. They faded out quickly so we decided to go with the blue blazed route. The trail was tough to follow in spots due to the snow plastered on the sides of the trees covering any blazes. We mostly stuck to the trail despite a rats nest of old posthole tracks running all over the place. Snowshoes were necessary here after the bushwhack split. We made it to the Long Trail and headed to Breadloaf. This trail was relatively easy to follow until we got to about 0.4 miles away from the peak. At this point, due to the time involved with trail breaking and trail finding, we knew we weren't going to go on to Wilson, so we turned back short of Breadloaf and left them both for another day. We broke the trail out to the Skylight Pond shelter on the way back to check it out. When we returned, it appeared that we were the only two on the Skylight Pond trail all day (except for some moose tracks). |
