Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Watch out for the wetness on the herd path to Big Jay. Upper part of the Long Trail has a small running stream in it.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The LT could use some water diverters on the section of trail between the short spur to the Vermonter ski trail and the wooden staircase but otherwise looks great . It looked like someone had illegally cleared blowdowns on the herd path.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Only one. The LT probably would easy for them, but there are a couple fairly tricky scrambles on the herd path that dogs might have trouble with.
Bugs
Bugs: Only a couple in swarms. None bothered us.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found a hair tie on the herd path.

Comments
Comments: Fall colors were excellent today. We enjoyed the short, steady climb up Jay and the summit views.

From the summit, we followed the LT down the ski trails to where it enters the woods on the other side of a tall, wooden fence. A short distance after the LT enters the woods, the herd path breaks off to the left. We followed the tedious, very wet, brushy, but easy to follow for 1.15 miles to the summit of Big Jay. (#100 NEHH!!!)
