Comments
Comments: I dropped off Danielle at the AT crossing on Route 4 and I drove back up to grab Deer Leap and we'd meet at where Deer Leap hits the AT near the Maine Junction. She ended up waiting for me for almost half an hour since I didn't figure in more than 800' elevation gain and difficult rocky footing! Cloud ceiling was low, maybe 2000' so the view from the ledge wasn't what I had hoped for... Danielle and I enjoyed a nice day on the AT and the weather was kind to us too. Misty morning and some light rain, only rained when Danielle had her pack cover off so I told her to keep it on! Ben's Balcony and Lakota Lake vistas are grown-in so don't expect much. Giffords Woods State Park Campground has a nice water spigot right on the trail and along Kent Pond there were lots of mushrooms. Thundering Falls are loud and lovely and the long boardwalk is swell. Footbed is soft and nice. Nice logging operation between Chateauguay Rd and Lokota highpoint, the cut left behind the Maple trees is a wonderful wildlife habitat and maybe a future sugar orchard--nice to see good active forest management. We ate lunch at the Stony Brook Shelter. We took a long break and enjoyed sunshine at The Lookout. A couple was staying there that were out for a few days section hiking. We only saw one other person camping off the trail just before Stony Brook. Trail was empty and quiet for us. A big day over 18 miles of new to us AT!
