got an early start up Mansfield to the Chin NYE morning. Started bare boot but switched to snowshoes quickly. It wasn’t too deep but I brought them and figured I’d pack down the trail a bit. Switched to crampons and axe at Taft Lodge. Noticed some storm slab that was a little reactive and cracks both below/above Taft Lodge that made me a little nervous about conditions on Profanity Trail near the top where it’s an open slope. Took LT up to the summit along the north ridge and was glad I had crampons/axe for this section. The little chimney was all ice, so my decision to bring an extra technical ice tool didn’t for a 6 mile ride wasn’t a complete waste. Close to the summit, it was very glazed over hardpack and a fall would be bad. Very windy up top but didn’t want to downclimb the LT so I walked across the ridge and gave Profanity a look. No slab problems but a lot of loose sluffing. it’s a really wide chute so I wasn’t worried about getting taken off my feet... but also wasn’t expecting to encounter multiple avalanche problems on this hike.

Bottom-line: take the Profanity Trail up from Taft Lodge unless you’ve got an axe and actual crampons. |
