The hike starts off at the Bucklin Trailhead where you head through the gate and down a logging road. After you pass a camp, you will come to an intersection after a clearing. Take the path to the left as this is the Hi-Road, where you will avoid the muddy and wet conditions on the Lo-Road. The Hi-Road then reconnects to the Lo-Road at a crossing of Eddy Brook. Head straight across the water as the trail climbs steadily up. There were a couple of switchbacks with cairns on the way up. We continued on until we saw the 3rd cairn on the right hand side of the trail. There is a ski sled hanging on a tree a little farther up the trail, so if you pass that you have gone too far. We headed up the herd path from this point. The herd path had flagging in several spots and was generally easy to follow. There is a section in the middle where there are some blowdowns, but you can figure it out easy enough if you look around for the path. We did not encounter anything too thick to get around or through on this herd path. The path led us straight to the rocky ledge where you get a great view of the Taconic Range and the Green Mountains. This trail then leads up to the actual summit across a small ridge. Even with the hazy heat and humidity it was a great day and fun time navigating around some old logging roads! I did see some people who I think may own the camp on the way down that looked like they were working on the land and the structure... not sure if the logging road passes through their private land, but they were very nice as we walked by. |
