Trail was broken and well packed since last week's snowfall; wound up carrying my snowshoes as pack-ornaments for the day, stayed in my crampons all day. Though I saw a couple on their way down who made it to the summit in yaktrax. Saw a couple backcountry ski tracks that crossed the trail after branching away from Brewers Brook. Beautiful views of Pico between the trees on the way up before the evergreens thicken up. The Long Trail over to Cooper Lodge was well defined but at the junction for Killington Spur it gets messy with a couple paths intersecting with multiple backcountry ski tracks. First half of the spur was a nice section winding through the trees then as it deepens with less tree cover the ice caps protrude out from the snow pack- side stepping with crampons was fine, looked like others hugged the right side of the trail with help from trees for stability. Clear skies at the summit, moderate winds, temps in the sun were very comfortable. |
