After my late weekend trip I still had Vermont on the brain. I didn't even unpack and simply swapped a few things around and hit the road late Tuesday morning towards Camels Hump. Got started up Forest City trail at mid-afternoon and made it to Montclair Glen in a little over an hour. Forest City is riddled with many postholes but firm enough for spikes with careful footing. Got set up and had a relaxing evening. Watching the moon rise over the trees was spectacular. I slept in, wanting to let temps warm a bit and the winds to subside a little. Started up the LT NB around noon and made it to the summit just after 2. The packed portion of trail deviates every so often from the trail but it gets you there. There is a deep snowpack along this section, if hiking in warmer temps snowshoes are certainly recommended. Lots of ducking due to deep snowpack. I had hiked this section last August on my week long section hike so I had the GPS track. I spent nearly an hour on the summit, briefly chatting with a couple guys from Burlington before I had the summit entirely to myself. Views were good in all directions albeit hazy. You could just make out George and the Presidentials as well as Moosilauke to the East. To the south you could barely see Killington. To the east the ADKs were easily seen. I made a speedy descent down Burrows trail and was back at the car just after 4. Burrows is a sidewalk in the upper sections, but in the hardwoods it is chopped up with numerous post holes. The sun was softening things by late afternoon but staying on what little monorail remained I was fine in spikes. Much of this will change with more snow and wintry mix on the way in coming days. Camels Hump was my first winter peak in VT and one of my goals for this winter. |
