| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
From the gated road that I would call a camp road instead of a logging road I hiked on a mixture of ice, snow and mud. I continued up the road where I should have gone right past a camp to head down to the brook instead I went straight up. I saw plastic blazes that read Catamount Ski Trail will have to check that out. |

I was hoping to find enough snow to AT ski up the roads but rain has washed most of the snow away and left behind ice and mud. At the place that feel like a little field I continued straight but should have gone right past a camp--I saw the roof, and down to the brook. I went climbed higher and I could see Mendon through the leafless forest above and decided to just whack down, cross the brook and go straight at it. I did end up a short distance upstream from that yellow sign, I was lucky to find a place to rock hop across and climbing the snow covered bank was a challenge.
Once on the other side on of brook I was standing on a packed ski trail. I put on my snowshoes and followed my compass straight up through marvelous open woods. I crossed a woods road but I had good grip and I wasn't sinking deep into the snow I continued straight up the steep mountain. I think I really lucked out with the snow conditions because it really made the steep terrain a lot easier to climb up. I was on top sooner than I thought I would be and I found Joe's glasses hanging on the tree across from the canister. He did a swell job repairing the register, thank you. On top I bumped around searching for outlooks, the ledge was super and I enjoyed an orange there. I could see nearby peaks but sky was really dark and I knew I had to hustle to beat the rain. Snow conditions were perfect for bounding down and I enjoyed some good sliding on my snowshoe-skis. My luck continued and it didn't begin to rain hard until I was safe and warm in my car. |
