Started at 10 AM. The Long Trail was dry for a while, but eventually turned into a monorail of snow. I didn't feel the need for microspikes until about 3100'. Didn't have any issues reaching Jay Peak. Had to contend with some blowdowns, watery sections, and unstable snow for most of the way to Big Jay. I was postholing every now and then from the saddle to the summit of Big Jay. On the way back to Jay Peak (~12:30 PM), the sun and warmth led to deteriorating conditions and I was postholing a lot more frequently. Snow bridges were breaking merely by looking at them as I was heading back down the Long Trail from Jay Peak, and there was a lot of running water from the snow melting.
On the plus side, there wasn't really much mud to contend with on the way to Big Jay. :) |
