Hiking Trail Conditions Report

Peaks Stratton Mountain, VT

Date of Hike: Saturday, June 7, 2014
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: A popular mountain, and I started late, around 11:30. Parking lot is large, but was nominally full (nominally because if people could learn to park properly there would have easily been room for 6-8 more cars). I parked on the grass opposite the lot, as did several other people. Lot beginning to empty out by mid-afternoon. The Stratton-Arlington Road (Kelly Stand Road) heading further West has a bridge out a few miles past the Stratton parking area (there is a sign warning of this about 1 mile past the parking area, friends in the area the day before confirmed there is indeed a bridge missing its deck), in fine shape from the East.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Nothing to write home about.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Well-maintained. The usual couple of Vermont mud pits down low, most you could hop through on rocks/logs, one or two had bypasses. I recall a minor blowdown or two, but again nothing major.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Easy dog hike, saw a couple that seemed to be loving life.
Bugs
Bugs: A few black flies hanging out near the summit but not really biting. Up on the tower it was breezy, so that may have contributed to their lack.

Comments
Comments: This has got to be the easiest single peak on the NEHH. 3.8 miles, 1750 feet one-way, and not a single steep section. Just a nice, gradual climb up, with terrific footing and only minimal mud despite it being spring and Vermont. I never really noticed the climbing.

The summit is treed-in, but there is a 55-foot tower with an enclosed top that has terrific views to Greylock (MA), Monadnock (NH), the surrounding VT area, and maybe even NY on a clear day? The summit caretakers were there chatting with some folks. Busy on the summit, but lots of little areas for all the small groups to sit together and be out of the middle of things. A very enjoyable, and quick hike. Well worth the hike.
