Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Wilson, Breadloaf Mountain, VT
Trails
Trails: Emily Proctor Trail, Long Trail, Breadloaf Spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, July 20, 2013
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The 3/10-mile road to the trailhead is in rough shape. We got a Corolla in OK, but great care was needed in a few spots. Main road in was fine. Smaller parking lot, but 7-8 cars squeezed in.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The only significant one, down low on Emily Proctor, was a rock-hop with dry boots. Deep pool to one side though, so be careful.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails were in great shape as seems to be the norm in Vermont. Needed some brushing at the turn to the water crossing (up-bound), but a pair of Youth Conservation Corps students partially brushed it in later in the day and the turn looks more obvious now. They were also working on brushing in some other herd paths higher up.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any, but nothing that should pose a problem for a dog. Not a ton of water above the main stream crossing.
Bugs
Bugs: Mosquitoes were out down low. Moving along mostly dealt with that issue.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Picked up a water bottle wrapper; was going to grab more wrappers/trash that people had left at the shelter on our way out, but the YCC students were there and had dealt with it by the time we returned from Breadloaf.

Comments
Comments: We decided to hedge our bets on the somewhat ominous weather forecast (which had improved slightly in the morning) and give these a go anyway, knowing the shelter was nearby if we needed it for a t-storm. Started out late, around 10, under clear blue skies. Started sprinkling as we approached the shelter, and as we stopped there for a snack break, we had to wait out a torrential downpour for 20 minutes or so. Could barely see across the shelter clearing it was raining so hard. But we were dry, yeay for the shelter!

Waited that out, saw nothing else on the radar within an hour or so, and headed off on the Long Trail to Wilson, returned, and hit Breadloaf. Not much view from the Breadloaf viewpoint due to the clouds, but there looks to be a nice, if limited, view at the end of the spur (which ends rather abruptly at a 15-foot or so drop, so be careful!) Returned to the shelter, saw the front line had mostly dissolved in VT, and so headed out, only getting a brief light sprinkle on the way down. Clearing skies by the time we hit the cars. Guess we timed this one nicely!

Thanks Theresa for coming along on this one, it turned into a pleasant walk in the woods, and 2 more NEHH checkmarks for us both.
