There were quite a few cars at the Ammo lot off the Base Road at 8am, but still the lot was not even half full. At 6pm there some of those had gone. |

 | Water Crossing Notes: |
There still is little water flowing down the streams. The crossings low down, at the Gem Pool and higher up were not a problem. At that last one, as usually is the case, there is that very shallow flow that is a multi-step but perhaps just a half inch deep flow that is no problem for waterproof footwear but otherwise a tip-toe sneaker soaker. The two crossings low down on Jewell are via narrow foot bridges. |

The new relocation of the lower part of Ammo is easy enough to follow, and there are blue blazes on the trees. I can imagine that after a lot of rain parts could be muddy. As others have noticed, the reroute doesn't go just moderately up, as the older section by the river. It has several downslope sections followed by regaining that lost elevation. This wasn't a big deal going up, but I can imagine a descent of this up and down part of Ammo at the end of a long hike would be unwelcome. Many have wondered why the relocation couldn't have followed a countour better. |

I found a small spring-closure light weight D-ring on the trail perhaps a quarter mile above the hut. |

We had a great one-day hole in the weather for this hike, with unlimited views, no wind to speak of, no dampness, no summit fog. There were quite a few other hikers up there, too. That rocky trek down Crawford and Jewell is slow-going. While the much less rocky trail encountered abruptly once down in "real" trees is welcome, although that easily traveled part of Jewell seems to go on forever at the end of a long day. |
