I loved this little mountain! Great views from the outlooks, but be careful near the edge. one misstep and it's hundreds of feet straight down. There is a fire tower on top that you can climb up 3? 4? levels to get a nice 360 view.
Going UP Coot is very steep. That ol' fire warden must've had an incredible jeep. The road/trail is dirt with plenty of loose rock. it starts to moderate after a half mile and then soon after it's a level walk out to the base of the tower and remains of the fire warden's cabins. There is also a solid picnic table for lunch. Coming down Bobcat is actual trail vs. old road and a little less steep. some muddy spots.
Getting to the TH...take Magalloway Rd from Rte 3 and turn right at the junction with "Magalloway Tower Rd". There is some flooding/washout soon after you turn onto tower road, that I suspect has been caused by beaver activity and could pose a problem for someone with a low clearance vehicle. Both roads are wide and dirt with a lot of loose rock and some ruts due to rain runoff. I never went faster than 25mph. Safest though to stick to your side of the road, especially when a Border patrol officer comes tearing up the road. |
