Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks John Rand Cabin, NH
Trails
Trails: Al Merrill Loop, Cabin Trail Spur, John Rand Privy Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, April 28, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking was fine. Access road now has A HUGE HOLE, be careful. Also there's still some ice on the borders of the road, especially on the turnaround, so be mindful of that too!
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Unstable)
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There are multiple small bridges along Al Merrill Loop, but most of them are half covered in snow. The Trail Spur to John Rand and to the John Rand Privy is very slidy. There is a water-crossing after the little bog bridge that, as I understand, wasn't originally there (given that the bog bridge doesn't go over it, but into it).
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There might be a drainage issue on the small trail leading to the privy. Otherwise, I can't tell-- too much snow!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: No dogs. :(
Bugs
Bugs: No, no bugs.
Lost and Found

Comments
Comments: I didn't think that the whole thing would be covered on a snow mat. Leaving this trail report so that other people can be prepared.

There is running water from melt going down the trail, UNDER the snow monorail. The monorail will promptly collapse under a human's weight in some sections, plunging your feet into running water!
