Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The first crossing took some thought but was manageable. The second crossing was difficult. (I took a long jump on the low flat rocks but others climbed/jumped down from the big boulders.) The crossings coming down AZ from Tom were difficult only because the snow banks are so high it's hard to climb down/up to the river.

Comments
Comments: This post is a couple days old but conditions haven't changed so it may still be helpful. The trail is patchy snow/ice/mud until the second crossing. We used spikes until the climbing started on Avalon then I used snowshoes the rest of the day. It is firmly packed but with warm weather can make the top inch soft and can make both spikes & snowshoes slippery... although it was only a minor annoyance. The section from Field to Willey is developing a "half monorail". The upslope side is deep packed snow but the downhill half of the path drops off steeply and makes it hard to stay on the narrow path.
