Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Two notable crossings (we took the Black Pond bushwack). Water was still pretty high and moving. We had to head upstream a little way on the first one to find a rock/tree combo. Second one (close to Brutus BW) was a little easier but needed poles and good balance.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Could easily navigate any blowdowns. Lower trail was pretty muddy - sometimes we couldn't easily avoid it.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn't see any today but it would have been pretty muddy and stream crossings might have been tough.

Comments
Comments: Mixed bag today from start to finish - we wore all the things. Trail started dry along LW and quickly got muddy toward Black Pond. We were able to bareboot until we started going up Brutus. At times we wanted to put on snowshoes but the trail was 15 minutes packed snow and 5-10 minutes of wet, rocky, muddy trail. We weren't punching through so we kept going. Brutus BW wet/mud/ice to start and then transitioned to more snow. Put spikes on to get traction to the ridge. The snowpack was not very firm on the ridge so we put snowshoes on to get to the actual summit. We kept them on until we got back to "the rock" where were turned to hit Brutus again. Back to spikes here and kept them on until we hit the junction with Black Pond BW. We had the occasional slide-off into deeper snow, but snowshoes would have been hard with the back and forth snow-mud-rock conditions. Barebooted out no problem along Black Pond. Slower than normal today (8 hr total; 7 hours moving) because of the trail conditions and finding safe water crossings - BUT still way better than working :)
