Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, April 15, 2024
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The gate was open, the ranger kiosk was unattended, the envelope slot had no envelopes and the envelope receptacle was taped over. The lot at the trailhead had a half dozen cars both when I started and when I finished. The restrooms are not yet open for the season.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I don’t think that there are specifically any water crossings on this route, but (as expected) there was a lot of water.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There are stepover blowdowns on both of these trails. Above treeline there are a generous number of blazes.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I saw one. It was off leash and not under the owner’s control. I don’t have anything nice to say about this situation; my clothes are dirty from yhe fog jumping on me and pushing me off a boulder, but fortunately I am mostly unharmed.
Bugs
Bugs: Not yet.
Lost and Found

Comments
Comments: I hiked up Winslow and down Barlow. Both have a good amount of ice in the middle sections, with bare rock above treeline and some slushy snow (2-6” deep, mostly but not completely stable) at the lowest elevations. I wore rock spikes for the icy bits, and they worked perfectly.
