Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: A few spots available along Kanc shoulder for Pine BB. Oliverian lot has a few near Kanc. Parking spots should increase as snow melts
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow - Spring Snow, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Expect to get wet feet and/or fall in at some point, especially if one heavier side of a human. Snow banks are collapsing. Many times path of least resistance was walking through stream & rock hopping rather than trusting snow bridges. Fortunately H20 levels not too high.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Many blowdowns throughout. Saw maintainer on Kate Sleeper working on trail signs & presumably clearing brush. Nice guy. Apparently there is a rare species restriction for clearing trees during warm season in WMNF. I’d assume it’s for bat roosting in trees.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw some paws but I wouldn’t due to postholing off the packed track on lesser used trails
Bugs
Bugs: Not yet
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Trail maintainer had lost some leather gloves near whiteface summit lookout but he said he would retrieve.

Comments
Comments: Slightly ambitious adventure with 3 hikers on the Sandwich Traverse. Was a fun physical & mental challenge. PBB & Tris fairly solid snow in AM cold. The top PBB ravine crossing got my heart rate up due to side slope & hard pack, but nice it was tracked out appropriately. H20 crossings on PBB not bad. Snowshoes from car. Mt Tri trail has usual blowdowns, steep pitches, narrow wedge spots, & slight off trail snow tracks. I’d recommend going spikes on Tris due to steeps unless you are postholing to Kate sleeper tr where it flattens out. Views from South slide awesome! Kate sleeper had one set of snowshoe tracks from someone who knew way so that was clutch. Only trace new powder from Sat night snow. I went to snowshoes due to postholing, but a lighter weight member didn’t & seemed fine mostly. White/pass area was well tracked until Walden tr on Pass where we broke trail. Steeps off Pass were
tough to break bc we were in short sections uncontrollably sliding down a bit. From there to car, it got interesting with trail breaking where snowshoes were only sane footwear. Warmer temps & nature of oliverian br trail made the H20’crossings tricky. We all fell a lot & laughed & cried constantly for 11.5 hrs. Exactly where I needed to be yesterday with my buds!
