Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lost a pair of Leki trekking poles somewhere in the vicinity of boundary line water crossing, presumably got pulled off my pack by branches looking for a suitable crossing spot.
Comments: We were able to bareboot the entire hike from the ammo lot to caps ridge and down jewell. This trail had clearly not been traveled in some time, nor had Jefferson notch road by foot or snowmobile. We expected to snowshoe the entire way but were pleasantly surprised with supportive yet deep snow with a small layer of slush on top nearly the entire way from the parking lot. Posthole count for the day was in single digits. The caps were completely dry and supplied fun scrambling. Above treeline was a mixed bag of the normal rocks and snowfields. I think we got very lucky with these conditions and the crampons, ice axe, and micro spikes got a free ride out of it, with any refreeze (and the coming snow) I’d expect the experience to be much different. Many of the snowfields on Jefferson (possibly optional) and on gulfside trail below clay can present sliding fall risks.
