Comments
Comments: We had a bluebird day early on, and it slowly faded to clouds mid-afternoon after we had had fine views. The trail is hardpacked but topped with 1-4" newer snow. Down low, it was sticky and balling up under the spikes. We switched to snowshoes at the Avalon/A-Z junction in anticipation of the steep section climbing toward Avalon itself. My Achilles tendons think that televators are the neatest thongs since sliced bread. The snow continued wet and sticky until we had left Avalon and headed for Field, where it was cool enough that the 3-4" of snow were mostly drier powder. That remained the case along the Willey Range Trail toward Tom, which we ignored, then partway down the A-Z, and we were back in the stickies. Snow is very deep high up - as much as five feet in places.
