| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of room in the Ferncroft lot. Porta potty at the lot. Parking is restricted to the lot with no road parking. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Dry Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow/Ice - Small Patches |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |

| Water Crossing Notes: |
River crossing on Dicey's Mill Trail required care with a moderate water level. I elected not to cross on "the log". I used two older crisscrossed logs to a small sand island and then rock hops. Other options are available depending on your preference. All other brooks are small and easily crossed. |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
WODC does a good job maintaining and building their trails. The head knocking tree that was on the cone of Mt Passaconaway on the Dicey's Mill Trail has been cut.
The Walden Trail has a foot diameter evergreen across the path about a tenth of a mile south of the junction with the Square Ledge Trail (stride/straddle over). |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Fine for dogs. Saw one dog today. |
|
| Bugs: |
Very few. What a relief. They may return with warmer temperatures on Friday/Saturday. The breeze probably helped keep down the black flies. |

| Comments: |
The Dicey's Mill trail is a well-constructed path with many rock steps making for an easy climb to Mt Passaconaway. Only small patches of snow/ice near the top that are easily avoided. A thin layer of running water on Dicey's Mill Trail just above the junction with the Rollins Trail. Walked down to the Passaconoway north viewpoint (top of the old slide trail). There was a bit mor snow/ice in this spur although it was easy to bare boot. Great views from this perch today. The Walden Trail has many steep pitches with some wet ledges. The Walden Trail has some rough footing and some ups and downs on minor peaks. The Wonalancet Trail was fairly easy going up to Mt Wonalancet from the Walden Trail. There is a short side path to a south viewpoint. A limited view towards Mt Whiteface through the trees on Mt Hibbard. No views at the summit of Mt Wonalancet. The descent from Mt Wonalancet is steep in places with lots of roots, rocks, and one ledge that would be difficult if wet/icy (mostly dry today). There is a great view of Mts Paugus and Chocorua from this ledge. Nice to see the green foliage. Saw some Painted Trillium, Red Trillium, Shadbush, and Hobblebush flowers.
Met many hikers including a woman from Littleton NH that I met on Mt Hedgehog on Saturday, two hikers from central NH who I met in the past, a man who is 96% through redlining, and a father and young son from Tamworth. |
