Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Falling Waters even in morning had enough flow that stepstones were underwater, Wet feet at most crossings
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: FW trail has several older blowdowns and one significant newer softwood crown completely blocking trail below last river crossing heading up. There was a messy bypass route around it. There were two trees, I cut the worst one out of the way and brushed in the bypass route. The other crown would require a larger saw and more time than I had to deal with it. It may be frozen in. There is still a bypass route around the remaining one but far less destructive. I also cut a fresh softwood blowdown below Shining Rock Spur. OBP has one nasty recent softwood blowdown across the trail, it would need a larger saw than what I had. No evidence that AMC is planning to spend any money on the loop despite the recent congressional earmark.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: I had a few black flies biting heading down OBP in midafternoon

Comments
Comments: Falling Waters deteriorating monorail transitioning to ice about 10 minutes short of Shining Rock Spur. Traction highly recomended above Shining Rock Spur as it was mostly wet ice with some monorail. Ridge was almost snow and ice free except for a few patches in the softwoods between summits. OBP has icy monorail in the softwoods from Greenleaf to treeline. Below Greenleaf its icy until 10 to 15 below the hut RUA.

Quite a nice summer like day on the ridge. Afternoon heavy rain showers moved in quick. Drove home in heavy showers drifting off the summits.
