Even with the warm temperatures, you need micro spikes and snowshoes for many miles of Franconia Ridge - basically all the shaded parts. Notably, between Flume Little Haystack is nearly all monorail, with postholes sometimes as deep as 3 feet. Many folks did ok with just microspikes, but for some of the slushier sections with unstable monorail and a lot of postholing, my friend and I had much better success with snowshoes. I suspect these conditions will persist for at least another week or so, unless we get heavy rains to accelerate the melt. Hard to imagine when starting the hike down in the parking lot in this warmth.
Monorail and ice persist on Old Bridle Path as well, from below the Greenleaf hut into the wood above, some of it pretty dangerous without spikes.
The exposed parts of Franconia Ridge - Haystack north to Lafayette and beyond - are clear and a delight.
Flume Slide's steep section (the last mile before the ridge) has running water all over the steep rocks. Definitely risky - the AT section the north is a better choice for climbing - and definitely do not descend Flume Slide. |
