PHEW. Every conditions possible today!
Dry trail from Lincoln woods and Osseo to Mile 3-ish. Spiked up then (stable snow/ice) Ladder sections sketchy but passable with spikes- can't really recommend descending. Snow more variable remainder of the way to flume, deeper and mushy. Good conditions between Flume and Liberty (fastest mile of the day) Continuing to Haystack after Liberty Springs, trail deteriorated as expected. We used spikes which were fine, snowshoes would have been ok but we had no real issue without. Just slow going in some fresh snow mess that was swiftly turning into mashed potatoes because of warm temps. (particularly tricky in final steep stretch to haystack but passable. Just slippery and tricky) Across the ridge we barebooted and it was slush/water/rock typical of warm spring. From Lafayette to the hut the trail was particularly awful- slippery slide mess, ankle deep slush, you just had to laugh because it was such a soggy situation! From the hut to the lot variable conditions- a lot of spikes on/off. Beautiful warm day- stunning views, a sign of things to come (just pack lots of traction because it is not summer yet up high!) |
