Comments
Comments: Liberty Spring - Put spikes on when the patches of hard packed ice/snow appeared after the major water crossing on Liberty Spring. Used the crappy ones today. Some of the butt sliding spots are pretty icy, but with rocks poking out it makes for great traction. Got to the Franconia Ridge jct and buried my snowshoes while I tagged Liberty, Flume, then Liberty again. Someone by the name of Josh came up Flume slide with full crampons and ice axe to avoid doing Liberty twice. He did not recommend Flume slide but is still a badass. Returned to the jct with Liberty springs after tagging Flume and decided to wear my snowshoes since I carried them all the way up. While they aren't necessary (lots of people wearing spikes) it sure made my life a helluva lot easier and I flew up to haystack while I watched others grabbing onto trees and post holing up to their thigh. Bareboot time from Little Haystack over to Lincoln, then the crappy spikes went on. I kept them on until the muddy stream on the trail section at the bottom of OBP, so most of the way. I did not find those steep sections on OBP challenging at all and current conditions actually made it better. I'm tall, so there's that to help as well. A lot of people out in sneakers and no traction - they rode the struggle bus. All in all it was a beautiful day for this hike - first hike I've done this month and have not been rained on :)
