| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Lots of tree litter and debris in the first 1/2 mile, which is more of a tripping hazard that anything else, particularly with spikes. A couple of blow downs that will need to be cleared, but nothing that can't be easily avoided. |

Definitely put your spikes on in the parking lot. You will need them as soon as you step onto the trail.
The first 1/2 miles has enough ice to justify wearing spikes from the get-go. Solid snow coverage starts about the 1/2 mile mark, or approximately when you approach the first crossing of the ski glades.
For the next 1/2 mile, or until you get off the last portion of the ski glades, there is significant ice. "Significant" meaning sharp traction required, and full crampons would probably be ideal. I used trail crampons, which were sufficient/adequate, but by no means the best choice. I will add that if I had my ice ax I could have used it on a couple of occasions for a little assist, and I would have liked to have it handy for peace of mind descending. Alas, I left both my crampons and ice ax at home.
Once above the ski glades it is smooth sailing all the way to the summit. Lots of snow still on the ground at elevation, except in the area of the open ledges. The packed snow/base in the trail is remarkably solid. No issues with post holing at all.
Very warm this morning. First hike of the year in my 3-season boots. First hike of the year without a base layer. |
