Comments
Comments: Near perfect trail conditions today. Hillsound Trail Crampons door-to-door. Got an early start, so the trails were solid frozen snow with soft plastic ice. Climbing up the steep pitches on the Avalon Trail was easy with our sharp spikes although it would be intimidating if you don't have good crampon footwork. Probably not a good idea to come down on without full crampons. The stretch from Field to Willey was nice and solid and very easy to follow. Field to Tom was also nicely packed and very fast as was the Tom Spur. Things got mushy and slushy coming down the A-Z from the Mt Tom col and back to Rt 302 which I attribute to warming temperatures and accumulating sleet/freezing rain. We only experienced freezing rain, sometimes blowing quite fiercely on Tom and then back again in Crawford Notch. When planning hikes with bad weather on the horizon, I've had very good luck with the 48-hour forecasts published by Weather.gov (NOAA). They are quite accurate when it comes to forecasting the time that rain/snow will reach you and the expected quantities. We got this hike done under the wire based on that information.
