Comments
Comments: A FINE day to be in Henry's Woods. It has been a spell since Sparrow and I sauntered together, and this one absolutely fit the bill. Trail runners itching to get out with a baby pack and the need for speed, hit this one early in the morning and you'll get your fix. Trails where dry/frozen until about 2.75 miles from the road. The next 0.75, or to elevation 2500, is muddy amd running rivers on the way out. From quite literally 2500 to about 3400 was firm even on the way out. Above that was choppy and wet. We tried to earn our "NO SPIKES NATION" badge for this one today, but someone had buttsled the last 0.1 above the rock, and we had to put our spikes on on the fly. Had the summit to ourselves for a good 45 minutes with 70+ (MWOBS) views. I got to enjoy a lunch of champions, buffalo chicken with a ramuken of bleu cheese and a lovely wobbly pop from Kettlehead. We kept our spikes on until just after coming back out of the PUD, as there is about 1-3" of unpacked powder on blue ice. Due to this trail being so shaded, it was still great going and no balling up. On the way out, Sparrow entertained me by checking out what I think is an abandoned version of the Mt. Garfield Trail, and what we think is the old tote/service road to the abandoned Bethlehem Water Supply location. Still definable, though its quite evident it's LONG been abandoned. Still lots to explore out there - we found what long ago was either a parking lot or a log yard. I will have to pull out some old AMC guide books and see if I can get more info. We ended up at the rocks, right at bridge #4, where you take the sharp left turn to the summer TH. Four days in a row... as Bill says... 'NO DAYS OFF"
