We were prepared with spikes, but were happy to see that no traction was necessary. There are some ice patches starting about 3/4 of the way up the trails, but all are isolated, sitting in low lying pockets between rocks, and are readily avoided by easy rock hopping. There was some mud, a little running water, and some slippery leaves going down White Cross, but nothing out of the ordinary for the season. My wife, two daughters (11 and 9), and I encountered no challenges of note beyond the standard rocky terrain and scrambling on Monadnock. Note that it is still early enough in the season that ice could form on the trail after this report, so please do your homework beforehand. It is likely advisable to at least bring spikes with you unless the weather has not dipped below freezing between this report and your hike. |
