Parking at Ferncroft road lot is free of ice and snow, slightly muddy. It’s a mile road walk to the start of dicey mill trailhead. |

Shimmied across tree on large crossing, other small crossings are rock hoppable, but the snow on the sides is crumbling, making for bigger jumps across. |

Some standing water and mud, but lots of thoughtful rock placement in the worst parts. |

Saw none. Dogs would struggle with the ice I think. |

Down low, for the first two miles, the trail is in spring condition with mud, wet leaves, and patches of slippery ice. Once you cross the river, it’s tons of loose snow, water running under hollow sounding snow bridges, and lots of very slick ice. About .5 mile from the summit we chose to turn around. The ice was simply too slick on too steep a slope with no way to bypass and no trees to hug. We had microspikes, but needed crampons. Descending what we did manage to try was tricky and very slow. |
