Comments
Comments: An early start and cooler temps provided another good day of hiking conditions. Bare head, bare hands and bare boots the whole way up. The road walk was boring but easy. Not much snow remaining there. Once on the trail it was pretty clean for the first mile, next mile was pretty messy with running water on the trail making for very soggy stepping. After that the snow appeared consistently to the top. Hard packed and easy to navigate in boots with good tread. The only place I would have liked to have had them on was the last few yards up to the summit. Pretty steep which made it hard to get a good grip. Doable but challenging. Snow and wind picked up at the summit making for a very quick visit with no views. Put my spikes on to descend the top and fuel my confidence as I ran down the top 2+ mile section. The new falling snow was a little sticky and started to clump on my chains so I took them off for the remainder of the way down. Aside from that, not much change in surface conditions throughout the morning. Several other people on trail: 1 early, early, early bird and a group of young people who had spent the night at the shelter passed me on my way up and the rest on their way up as I made my way down. Very pleasant day on the trail. Conditions are hanging in there for some good spring hiking. Carried my snowshoes, wish I had left them in the car this time. You never know during this season. Happy hiking!
