Beaver Brook XC Ski Trail, Gale River Trail

Starting at 7am provided the (near) perfect conditions for today's hike. A little muddy/watery along the XC ski trail in spots and a few other places on the Gale River Trail down low, but other than that, trail was bare ground for the first 1.5-2+ miles. Traces of ice lined the middle section for a while, easily maneuvered on or around, then the rest of the way up, snow covered the entire trail. It was, however, very hard packed at that hour in the morning and stayed that way all the way to the summit. Never needed to put any traction on the entire way from bottom to top to bottom. Although, on my return trip, after passing about 9 hikers on their way up and with the temps warming a bit, the trail conditions did start to turn to mashed potatoes, making it a bit more difficult to walk in. Snow depth is not such that it was causing any postholing though. Just made the trail a little messy. If you like hiking in snowshoes, or using microspikes, have at it! - once you reach the snowy area. Otherwise, not really necessary, at least this morning. Cooler temps should hold these early morning conditions steady for the next few days. So get out there before it all turns to slush and mud. Happy hiking!
