Comments
Comments: A little bit of everything on today's hike. Blueberry Ledge Tr at low elevation is icy. Once the incline started, it was a combo of ice and snow/ice free trail. With higher elevations, there was more ice and a hard monorail. I managed to get over the ledges using microspikes. Part of the ledges again, had a combo of ice, snow, or were clear of both. Along the Rollins Tr, it was mostly a hard monorail with some pockets of ice that made descending rather tricky. Heading up Passaconaway along Dicey's Mill Tr, it was hard packed monorail and some pockets of ice. Descending down Dicey's Mill Tr, at lower elevations (but before the river crossing), the monorail was softening due to the afternoon sun. But the snow depth wasn't that deep at lower elevations. Beyond the river crossing heading to the trailhead, there were areas of persistent soft ice (thanks to that afternoon sun) and areas of trail that were clear of snow and ice.

My snowshoes took a free ride today, but that is because it was a cool day and I was off the monorail at higher elevations before the afternoon sun came around. I was back at my car at Ferncroft by 2:30pm. If it was 10 degrees warmer and I was along the Rollins Tr in the afternoon, I could easily see myself in snowshoes. The monorail at higher elevations is uneven and chopped up in places. I saw some postholes but not many in the big scheme of things. The deepest one I saw was about thigh deep. High elevation shady places on the northern side of mountains was where the deepest snow was located.
