Is it worth walking up Tripoli Rd in winter and climbing Mt Osceola from the Tecumseh side in order to avoid climbing the East Peak? The jury is still out. It certainly makes for a much longer hike. Tripoli Rd was a sheet of ice from the Livermore trailhead to the Osceola Trailhead this morning and slush by the afternoon. Conditions on the Mt Osceola Trail weren't that much better. I used Trail Crampons for the first 500' of elevation amidst rock and ice before switching to snowshoes for the remainder of the climb. The trail is pretty badly mangled by postholers and people who've snowshoed in warm conditions and left deep ruts in the trail. There isn't any monorail. The snow gets very deep towards the summit. Very blustery today up top. We didn't stay long. |
