Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Several cars parked various places at 9:30am but plenty of parking. The large field for hiker parking was open too.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Faraway Mtn Trail had a lot of running water on trail and under the snowpack, which you would find when you fell through. Feet were soaked. All other legit crossings had bridges or were hoppable.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Moved A LOT of down branches off the trails. Still more left. A couple larger branches/trees that I couldnt do anything about but you could easily go around or over them.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Met a few friendly dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: None, probably one of the better things about the day.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Found a Mens medium OR shell mitten, left it at the kiosk! Also found a woman's sunglasses and was able to get them back to her.

Comments
Comments: Cold Spring had sections of snow and bare ground, no point in snowshoes. Faraway Mt trail also went back and forth with a decent amount of soft snow and bare ground with running water on the trail. Feet got really wet. About a mile up the snow got deeper and I put on snowshoes. It was still a miserable slog and was postholing up to my knees even with them on. High Ridge trail was a little better, there was more snow but the packed monorail was near impossible to decern after the rain. Going off it at all you would twist your ankle and posthole (in snowshoes). Poles were a must, saved me from falling or braking an ankle. Closer to Roberts someone bare boot post holed up to their hip in places. Finally got better just before Roberts and was able to use spikes breifly before reaching the ledges which were bare. Bare booted the rest of the way down even though there were a couple brief sections of snow and ice (good bit of ice at the very bottom too).

It was an exhausting day, slow moving, and I needed my extra socks. If after reading this you still want to do faraway mtn trail or venture to the ridge, I solute you. A woman skiing the High Ridge trail looked like she was doing better than I was. Lastly, I am 90% sure I saw bear tracks cross the trail near the wetland between the Faraway lookout and Roberts.
