Comments
Comments: Great hike! If you like it stormy and gnarly, today was the day! High winds, falling temps and probably 6"+ of snow fell during my hike.
Started with spikes, but I needed crampons on the steep ascents up East Osceola, and kept them on out to Osceola and back. Lots of ice through the steep sections and spikes were not cutting it, especially with the thick, fresh powder that fell all day.
If you are hiking anytime in the next few days, you should expect 6-10" of powder on the trail and heavy drifting (esp. near and between the summits) with ice and packed snow beneath. Snowshoes and crampons may be best. I did it without snowshoes, and relied on more aggressive traction at the top, and spikes lower down. Worked well for me.
The Chimney was iced in but you can bypass it to the right of the trail (on the ascent) pretty easily.
