Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parked on side of road at trail head. Success Pond road is not paved, lots of pot holes. But, my sedan made the trip. Most was down to dirt (or mud at the end of the day) with a few icy sections. Logging trucks are using the road; we parked off on the side to allow for passage.

Comments
Comments: Snowshoes from start to finish; only other person on the trail apparently agreed. The recent rain left a crust over everything, and it seemed that we would break through w/o snowshoes. The trail was hard packed but may not consistently support spike travel, especially at the higher elevations where we occasional broke through in snowshoes. Plus, the trail was a little uneven, and snow shoes offered better stability. Couple of icy locations that could be worked around. One smaller chimney on Mahoosuc Trail where the limbs of several tress on the side of the trail came in handy.

Slight cloud cover limited views; but in general, the views were fantastic.

We made the trek to the airplane. Looked as if the trail has not seen much travel recently this winter. After the cairn on the large boulder on the left side of the trail, the herd path is marked with yellow blazes and pink ribbons. A bit of work getting through the branches & brush to the site, but fun. It was easy to follow our path back to the main trail; unfortunately only other person on the trail today can take advantage of our trail breaking effort to the plane as the site may get a substantial snow coating tomorrow.

From what I have read, this trail can be pretty muddy. Good thing mud is generally not a problem with winter travel (only mud was on the road at the end of the day). Great to bag this under such nice conditions. Of course, trails will need to be broken again with the impending storm and additional snow fall.
