Such plentiful snow at the start of the trail that 2/4 of us went back to the car and donned snowshoes for the full trek. Most others on the trail wore spikes or bare booted, but with the exception of section with a lean snowpack right before the viewpoint and on the ledges, I was glad for the ‘shoes, especially on the softening snow of descent. Spikes were fine too. After the Mt. Roberts summit the trail has limited foot tread so snowshoes would be a must if you wanted the full traverse over to Shaw.
Crystal clear views of Mt. Wash, Wildcat, Carrigain, Lafayette, the Tri’s, Mt. Monadnock, and more with great, fast trail conditions today. Passed at least 15 others who like us were getting out ahead of tomorrow’s rains. Loved watching the sun dip low on the horizon as the silhouette of the Belknaps framed the way back to the car. How lovely to visit with this old friend of a peak. |
