This report expires today with the rain, warm temps, and winds slated for tomorrow.
The snow was soft and/or fluffy and/or deep. Especially on Rollins. Snowshoes were needed but not everyone wore them.
A pristine soft snowshoe track was started by the first half dozen folks in SS - until the 6 mile mark (did out and back from Dicey’s). From there, Rollins was destroyed by about 10 Post-a-hole-ics Anonymous members. Fortunately, 3 super guys with snowshoes were able to pack down much of the damage. Everything is still super soft.
There were 15-20 cars still at the lot at 3:45 pm so not sure of the conditions after that time. Some of those folks may have been snowshoeing the trails at the end of the lot.
Food for Thought: The cost of snowshoes does not justify intentional disregard for the safety and enjoyment of other hikers. Snowshoes are part of the “10 essentials” from about December until the end of April/beginning of May up here in the Whites. Showing up to a trailhead, especially after recent snowfall, without them, is inconsiderate and potentially dangerous/injurious to others. |
