Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at the “Seven Dwarfs” lot and left $10 in an envelope on my windshield. Though Little River Road was plowed that lot was not plowed. It had 2-3” new snow from overnight; my Subaru didn’t mind.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I have trouble with the third crossing in the summer, LOL, and it was the problem today. Previous reports, and FB photos, showed a snow bridge near (but not at) the third crossing, which was partially open requiring a leap to get across. It’s possible that that snow bridge exists but I couldn’t find it due to the new snow (4-6” with drifts). I bushwhacked around looking for something that seemed passable but ended up heading back.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Nothing concerning on the main trail; the bushwhack is, well, you know, a bushwhack.

Comments
Comments: I wasn’t really convinced that I would be brave enough to leap across a chasm with the hopes that the snow bridge would be intact on the other side of my leap; I never got a chance to test my bravery! I knew there was going to be trouble when it was 2-3” new snow on the road walk, and I was the first one out on it all today. I put on my snowshoes after crossing the private bridge, per the instructions, and had them on the whole hike, until I returned to the bridge.
The walk up to Haystack Road was also 2-3” new snow, and you could see the faint trough where prior hikers had been. Haystack Road is a mix of hiking boots, snowshoes, and xc skis (no visible fresh snowmobile tracks). The new snow filled in a lot of the uneven sections.
As per usual, I used the bushwhack rather than the first two crossings of the Little River (incorrectly named, in my humble opinion). North Twin trail up to the Fire Warden’s junction is a lot of postholes under new snow. That made it slow going on the way up. After the junction, the postholes disappeared and the new snow was 4-6” and more. In some spots it was hard to follow the prior trough, and in some places the trough went a route that was a bit unfamiliar to me, but it got the job done.
When I got to the third crossing I couldn’t see where people were crossing. I bushwhacked upstream of the junction and found a spot that might have been it, but all that I could see was new snow over boulders in the river, with intermittent open sections. It was a no-go for me so I headed back. Live to hike another day!!
On my way back I crossed paths with two snowshoers headed to Hale, so the Fire Warden’s trail is broken out as well!
