Comments
Comments: On way up one young couple with a dog passed us, and at the summit we ran into a group, arriving just after we had, of 4. On the way down conservatively, we saw maybe another 1-1/2 dozen hikers, all bare-booting or sporting microspikes. We had opted to don snowshoes for the whole hike, which frankly were great, and helped keep the trail snowcovered - the layer beneath the 4"-6" snow cover was often a thick sheet of ice. Thanks to those that posted yesterday on their Mt Roberts / Mt Shaw hike. We found similar conditions, although, unfortunately, the lack of snow shoes on most hikers boots or butts (for those butt-sliding) was starting to expose more ice on this trail.

(Aside: I hadn't been up to the Castle-in-the-Clouds area in probably 39 years. I recollect driving up the auto road to visit the Castle in fall with two friends, thereupon finding it not open for the day. This was long before the internet, cell phones, and we hadn't bothered to pick up a landline to call ahead before we hit the road North. We left there and instead drove over to a more Northern ski area for an alpine slide ride. That was complete hoot, although I'd hesitate to another such ride down a mountain now. ;-) )

Generally just a great day on a small, beautiful mountain, 100% better weather than NOAA had predicted, as the higher wind gusts, cloud cover and predicted afternoon snow squalls held off. We were off the mountain by roughly noon. By then the cloud cover to the North and largely over the Osipee mountains was completed. To the South over the lakes there was still some sun visible earlier.
