Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Cooper and Piper had a blast breaking trail. Coop did great despite his shorter stature and tons of fur gathering occasional ice clumps. Just word of note, lots of snowmobiles were traveling along the High Ridge Trail on the approach to Mt Shaw (dogs were leashed and we jumped off the path to let hem pass); everyone was nice.

Comments
Comments: Barebooted to and from trails head down road. Snowshoes from the start to finish. Roberts Trial should be in great shape for snowshoes after yesterday. We saw about a dozen others on the trail all in snow shoes except the early trail breakers (and the skiers skinning up). Snow coverage varied from 6" to dusting on higher ledges where snow had been blown off.

As the only hikers to continue on to the High Ridge Trail, we had the honor of breaking trail. It seems that all the snow blown from the ledges ended up on the High Ridge Trail. The drifting varied from 6" to more than 18" (mostly more than a foot). I believe the skiers (actually 2 snow boarders and 1 skier) followed, but they took a nice glade run back to the lower elevations. The drifting seemed to build to the max height in the middle of the wide trail with a small path of lower coverage off to the side. I apologize to those following that we took the low coverage line which often passed through the branches on the side of the trail. At least there is a broken trail to follow until the next snow fall, or it gets covered by more drifting.

Once we passed the Oak Ridge cutoff the trail was broken by some bare booters. We passed 2 couples on the trail to Shaw, both in spikes churning up the trail, as expected. Trail had about 6" of powder. The last mile or so followed the snow mobile trail where we were passed by many snowmobilers. Most slowed to get past us and we made sure to step off the trail to give them plenty of passing room.

New snow fall of about 4-6" on the lower trails towards Shaw were churned up by lots of traffic. The final road walk was along the plowed road, but we took the opportunity to walk on top of the snow plowed along the side to avoid carrying snowshoes; seems like others were doing the same.
