| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Osceola Trailhead not accessible by car; parked at the plowed pull-over approx. 0.2mi down the street. From there, one can either road walk to Greeley Ponds trail or hike in on the cross country trail; I opted for Greeley Ponds; another hiker who was with me at the parking lot, opted to snowshoe on the other trail; we met back up at the trail juncture |

| Comments: |
total of five hikers on the trail; I barebooted Greeley Ponds since it was well-consolidated; used snowshoes to ascend both peaks; near Mt Osceola peak, Capt. Chris and I re-met--he broke out the entire trail--thank you! (We met at the juncture when I put on snowshoes, but he was faster than me up to East Osceola and across the ridge to Mt. Osceola.) We both used the bypass of the bypass at the chimney; one hiker was trying the bypass when we returned; all others appear to have used bypass of bypass. When returning across the ridge, we both had unintentional falls, resulting in butt-sledding in steep sections. This had us decide to switch to crampons/microspikes for the descend off of East Osceola. It was way safer. We spoke with another hiker who had the same plan. (All hikers we met wore snowshoes as well.)
Descending on crampons (Capt. Chris) or microspikes (me) gave us better footing on the steep descend. Yes, it means we 'mucked up' the trail here and there, but it was the only way we felt comfortable descending.
The ridge is still not well-consolidated; snowshoes still the best way to travel there. |
