Started out with boots and microspikes all the way up to Champney Falls. Trail was broken out but too many people like us without snowshoes made it awkward. Champney Falls is all frozen over with huge ice displays and worth a look. Put our snowshoes on to climb out of the Falls on the steep pitches back up to the main trail and kept them on for the remainder of the hike, which was much easier and made the trail better for others. Definitely recommend snowshoes the whole way until things are more solid underfoot. Passed by woodsyjess also wearing snowshoes. Champney Cut Off trail over to Middle Sister had seen less traffic but was easy with shoeshoes. Great open ledge for views to the north and west along the way. Trail from the col over to the summit of First Sister was not broken out at all. Climb up to the summit of Middle Sister was windswept hard snow or ice in a few patches but easy to traverse with snowshoes. |
