Headed up this morning after 10†of snow, followed by rain and then a hard freeze overnight, hoping to either break trail with snowshoes or at least build on a snowshoe track behind someone who arrived earlier. Incredibly, the first two hikers before me had decided to bareboot with spikes all the way to the summit. 10†postholes and deeper in the drifts, I did my best to fill them in. From summit cairn to the cliff viewpoint, I was able to get a good snowshoe track going. Crust on top, strong enough to hold me in spots, otherwise soft powder underneath.
On descent, I passed another barebooter tearing up the path. I also met another snowshoer who was not going to the summit, but was also helping to form a decent pack for the trail. What could have been a superhighway after today with snowshoes breaking trail, will now take a few more days of traffic to even everything out. Highly recommend snowshoes if venturing out over the next couple of days. |
