| Comments: |
Half our group wore spikes and the others crampons. A few of us brought ice axes for the steeps and the chimney. Only one of us with a real ice climbing axe successfully climbed the chimney--a solid ice fall. There are 2 ways to bypass the chimney.
Spikes seemed okay on the way up but crampons recommended for solid footing. Snow was hard packed with patches of ice and ice bulges around rocky outcroppings. Definitely felt more stable using crampons on the way down. Temps were in the single digits at start and warmed to the teens but thanks to 2 days of frigid weather, the trail was really a mix of hard pack and ice and had an extra layer of loose powder towards the peaks.
It had been a while since I'd done these peaks. I'd forgotten how steep they were especially in the stretch toward East Osceola. |
