Date of Hike: Thursday, November 18, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Parking on 302 at trailhead. Space for several cars. I was the only one today!
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Mud - Significant, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Most were easy to rock hop. A couple crossings of Nancy Brook past the cascades were challenging because of slippery, wet snow on the logs laid out for crossing. All the boardwalks were challenging because of snow cover making it difficult to see where they started and stopped and challenging to not step in the gap between boards. Wet snow also made them very slippery.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: More blazes would be helpful especially at water crossings and some of the sharp turns. Noticed more blazes closer to the ponds and also noticed more on the descent than ascent.

Comments
Comments: Trail is easy to the cascades. Wide with decent footing despite all the wet leaves. The cascades and waterfall were quite impressive! Past the cascades there was more snow- about 2-3” and the trail was steeper. No need for micro spikes until the herd path which was very steep but easy to follow- easier than the Nancy Pond Trail was in places! Spikes got caked with wet snow every couple steps which made for slow going. I didn’t remember to look for a summit sign. Views are limited at the top- partially obstructed by trees. Mount Washington was in the clouds but Webster, Stairs, Resolution, Doublehead, Kearsarge North and many more peaks were clearly visible. Overall a long, slow, slippery hike. Rain and darkness on the way down increased the challenge even on the easier parts of the trail below he cascades. Probably not a great one for shoulder season!
